2016

Well another year draws to a close and show wise I've had a quiet one, choosing to concentrate on producing a complete body of work rather rushing to put out 'bit-part' exhibitions. In early June I moved into my studio space in Bankley (Levenshulme) and this has been a valuable venture. I was ecstatic to be accepted by the panel and have found the freedom and space afforded to me by having this studio within a contemporary collective to be priceless both mentally and creatively. I t has enabled me to produce works on a scale that I could never have produced before and in turn this process has evolved in to experimentation with media I had turned my back on. The chance to actually spend time to contextualise the work properly and discuss with other artists and members of the public aspects of theory has meant I feel that I am certainly heading in a direction that is positive.
So what for 2016? My large scale 'map-like' drawings are to continue, with these developing into 3d digital pieces (using 'Blender') and in turn another level of simulation is to be added in the form of paintings. I'm excited about the prospect and look forward to building towards a show at some point. The Scottish geologist James Hutton said...." No vestige of a beginning, no prospect of an end...." and so on it goes.

Artist statement

An up to date statement concerning my current work.
Artist Statement
My current practice is centred mainly around painted and drawn formats, alongside photography, digital composition and occasionally collected imagery from magazines, websites etc…
The most recent project I have been working on has focussed primarily on mark-making, line and gesture. However these pieces have an intentional ambiguous narrative that hints at (and makes reference to) a number of differing sources and interests that I find ever fascinating.
From a young age I have been excited by tales of exploration and old maps, this in turn has become an adult obsession with sea charts, aerial photography, weather forecasts and many aspects of geophysical phenomena (in particular theories relating to the formation of supercontinents) and has grown from a juvenile love of the ‘fantastic’ nature of such subjects, into a study of the abstract qualities of cartography ( ideas relating to scale and distortion) and it’s potential.
Making reference to literary work by Borges, Baudrillard, Verne and Eco, amongst others different mediums to produce works with a duality that questions both the idea of the ‘Real’ and the ‘Abstract’.
Starting with a series of old macro photographs (taken from a long since destroyed series of gestural abstract expressionist paintings) these images have been digitally manipulated and worked upon to create compositions with a far more infinite potential, each work being a direct response to the last. What are left behind are images that no longer have any origin in the ‘real’ world but instead exist only through the emergence of their own mythology, a journey through  undiscovered seemingly dystopian landscapes.

New Home and New Work

After a period of relative detachment I have decided to re-enter society. To celebrate this and my imminent move to a great new studio space at 'Bankley Studios' in Levenshulme here are a few works which I have completed over the last 6 months. All are pencil and ink on paper and are taken from my current series 'Floating Mass'. Any questions regarding the work or any other on this blog please drop me a line.
